Angel is the one who cares, who protects, who protects, who is supportive, who is always around and helps in times of difficulties. In Blumenau we have the angel bike, a group of volunteers, experienced cyclists, lovers of cycling and human mobility, who teach any person who wants to learn to use the bike safely.
Moreover, in the year in which CONTRAN chose as theme of the National Traffic Week the theme “Cities for people: protection and priority to the pedestrian” one could not imagine a city for people without cyclists. Even because dismounted cyclist and pushing the bike is also pedestrian.
Those who pass Ramiro Ruediger Park on Thursdays around 8pm can meet them, always helping, explaining, teaching tips, cares, precautions to learn how to pedal and defend themselves from the dangers in a city that still offers Little for so many cyclists. Those who are already more familiar with the bike participate in the group pedal on Fridays, leaving from Parque Ramiro Ruediger at 7:30 pm, also aimed at beginners. The service of the angel bike is individualized and free: just have a bike and want to start pedaling that they will always be ready to help.
The angel bike is a national project: currently, there are more than 780 volunteers, distributed in about 80 Brazilian cities and in Blumenau is part of 2012. Only from January to July 2013, a thousand requests were attended.
The great success of the angel bike in Brazil is in the mobilization for the change of mentality and behaviors aimed at the sharing and the safe displacement in the traffic, bringing more confidence for the beginner cyclist. It starts from the idea that the more cyclists in the streets, the greater the visibility for this means of transport, that the act of pedaling with company brings more safety and that an extra bicycle can mean a car less in traffic.
According to ABC Ciclovias data, the repressed demand of cyclists in Blumenau is 70% of all who want to start using the bike, but many have not encouraged themselves because they do not know how to start pedaling or lack of safety. At Rua João Pessoa, for example, the running lanes are so narrow that it is impossible to respect the minimum distance of 1.5 meters between the rider and the vehicles, and the driver trying to do so ends up invading the counter.
The group of Blumenau is eclectic, formed by 6 volunteer cyclists: Maristela Pedrelli works in the commerce and is leader of filial; Leandro Reinert is a construction manager; José Márcio de Souza is an IT structure analyst; Carlos Roberto Pereira is a civil servant; Marta Dalpiaz is a veterinarian and Ana Paula is a city planner.
In addition to assisting with the first notions since guiding and securing the bike to have more balance, they accompany on the first pedals, show the safer routes, give tips on basic maintenance of the skin and self-care measures in traffic.
But, best of all, is that the angel bike, as well as cyclists bound or not to the Association Blumenauense Pró Ciclovias, are people who believe in a better city to live and defend the rational use of the vehicle and the bicycle as an alternative means And sustainable for human mobility in transit. “We believe in a better city, with a safer transit for people, through education and guidance, and more than that, because we were also beginners and know how to start pedaling in the city,” says Maristela Pedrelli.
Accustomed to pedaling in the cities and to different types of pedals, like the trail, the cicloturismo, Speed or just to the walk or to go to work, the angel bike explain that are many people who use the bicycle for great displacements, going from one Neighborhood to another or even crossing the city. This orientation of the bike angel is important, since using the bike in this way is different from using it in a sports or leisure way.
