For The Second Consecutive Year, Historic Mariana Hosts Iron Biker Brasil
On September 19, 20 and 21, 2014, the historic city of Mariana, in the Central region of Minas Gerais, receives 1,200 athletes for the most traditional mountain bike competition in Latin America, Iron Biker Brasil, which reaches Its 21st edition, maintaining the high level of challenge of the race. There will be 140 kilometers of trails, divided into two days of testing – Saturday and Sunday-, lots of excitement and stunning scenery, all the way through. In 2014, Iron Biker Brazil will feature athletes from all Brazilian states, as well as international attractions such as Swiss Lukas Kaufmann and Colombian Angelita Parra, champions of the elite category last year.
The entries for this edition are sold out, proof of the success of the competition and the great interest of all the participants. In fact, it is worth highlighting the female participation that, in the last three years, there has been an increase of more than 40% of women’s participation. For them and for them, the emotion begins before the sun rises for the start of Saturday. One of the characteristics of Iron Biker Brazil is to create events parallel to the main event. On Friday night, the nightly challenge occurs, when athletes of the elite category (men and women) cross the Mariana Center, going up and down slopes, facing stairways and bridges. Disputed in five laps, the course is 3 kilometers.
Another highlight of Iron Biker Brazil is the “King of the Mountain”, created in 2013, with the goal of being one more attraction within the competition. The organization of the event defines a stretch of ascent of 2 kilometers, within the course of Saturday. Any athlete can participate and whoever makes the best time (registered by competitors’ GPS) in the chosen section, is entitled “King of the Mountain”.
In addition to promoting sports and tourism in the region, Iron Biker carries out a joint action with communities close to Mariana. In the delivery of the kit, athletes donate 2 kilograms of non-perishable food. The more than two tons of food will be donated to the residents of the four districts that are part of the competition: Camargos, Santa Rita Durão, Bento Rodrigues and Bandeirantes.
“The expectations for 2014 are the best possible, the event has set all the records since its inception 22 years ago, and that makes us very honored,” said one of the directors of Iron Biker, Lucas Fonda. “We took the opportunity to invite everyone to visit the city of Mariana, on September 19, 20 and 21, even if not to compete, but to accompany and encourage the 1,200 athletes and enjoy the whole structure of the event in those three days of Party of the sport”, completes.
Mariana, The House Of Iron Biker
First city of Minas Gerais, and also the first state capital, Mariana, founded on July 16, 1696, is a symbol of natural and cultural riches. For the second consecutive year, the Iron Biker will take place in the region’s historic mountains. The partnership between the organization of the event and the city hall of the city was so certain that the competition will be held in the city until 2016.
Perfect for mountain biking and Iron Biker, Mariana welcomes competitors and tourists from all over the world during the weekend of the event and is a strong economic element for the city. With 100% of its hotel network occupied-the same happens in municipalities located within a radius of 70 kilometers, such as Ouro Preto and Itabirito. An important factor for tourism, the Iron Biker, besides encouraging the culture of the sport in the region, is an entertainment option for the families of the surroundings of Mariana and promotes the place as point of visitation throughout the year.
“We prepare to develop this tourism chair and make Mariana a more visited city every time. With the Iron Biker, the image of Mariana and Minas Gerais goes through Europe, the United States and South America. Along with the organization of the event, we are prepared to welcome tourists. Everything you do with competence brings a very positive result,”says the mayor of Mariana, Celso Cota Neto.
21 Years Of Adrenaline
The history of Iron Biker Brazil is confused with the history of mountain biking in the country. In 1989, when the first off-road bicycles began to appear in the country, the Belo Horizonte Mountain Bike Club (MTBC) was founded, responsible for the first and most important events to promote the sport at the time.
Following the success of the events and the boosted growth of the sport, in 1993 the so called “Mountain Challenge” was created, soon to be named Iron Biker Brazil and was born as the greatest mountain bike race in the country and the first Test in the marathon format of the world (to date there are no reports of any MTB marathon race prior to Iron Biker Brazil).
Over 21 years, the event has been collecting records and stories, followed the evolution of equipment, athletes and, mainly, helped to promote the MTB and its market, which, like Iron Biker Brasil, gains body and new fans each day.
The story continues and Iron Biker Brasil maintains its objective of walking side by side with mountain biking, performing innovative, surprising and challenging events, being part of the history of who completes the test and places our medal in the chest.
