Unlike In London, Beijing And Barcelona, Rio De Janeiro Subdivides Areas That Will Receive Competitions
The Rio 2016 Organizing Committee held the second World Press Briefing on Wednesday (6), which hosted around 200 Brazilian and foreign journalists to present the main installations and projects underway for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Unlike in London, Beijing and Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro subdivided the areas that will receive the competitions. So that the works were not only realized in a single space, the city was divided in four regions: Copacabana, Deodoro, Barra da Tijuca and Maracanã.
The four regions will have a total of 31 sports facilities and one part is already built. The structures used at the 2007 Pan-American and Pan-American Games and during the 2011 Military Games will be revitalized.
“These projects have been transforming the city since she was elected the host of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Either the city benefits the Games or the Games benefit the city. We chose the second option and believe that the Olympics and Paralympics are important to engage and motivate people to be part of the project,”said Joaquim Monteiro, president of the Municipal Olympic Enterprise (EOM), responsible for coordinating the implementation of related municipal activities and projects To the Games.
Other regions still need to be erected, being divided between permanent structures, which will remain as legacy to the city and the country, and temporary, erected only for the event in 2016.
“An example of a temporary installation is the Aquatic Center which will later use the material used in its construction to benefit some region of the city. Another example is the Arena of Handball, which despite being temporary for the Games, will be permanent for Rio de Janeiro, because it will be transformed into at least three public schools,”explained Joaquim.
Two years from now, the city of Rio de Janeiro will be remodeled. In addition to the structures that will serve as headquarters for the Games, the capital of Rio de Janeiro continues to benefit from new roads and means of transportation, a renovated port, cleaner Guanabara Bay, and other changes. “The 2016 Games will be the Legacy Games. We are now putting into practice projects that were once only on paper. We want to make the legacy of the Games be transformed into benefits for the city, tourists and residents. That is why we divided in four regions, in order to spread the Games through Rio de Janeiro. In the end, there will be at least two million people benefiting only from the impacts of the events,”said Monteiro.
In order to show the progress of the works, the visits promoted by the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee with the journalists focused on the existing spaces and points where the works have already begun. In the Olympic Park, after the FIFA World Cup 2014 they have gained a new rhythm and it is already possible to see much of the complex being erected. In Deodoro, a month ago the first machines arrived to ensure the construction of the slalom kayak circuit and the BMX track.
The Parque de Deodoro, located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, is an important area for the city in terms of development. The revitalized or erected buildings will be left to the local population, aiming the growth of the community by the sport practice.
In 2016, Deodoro will host 11 Olympic and four Paralympic modalities: basketball, modern pentathlon, fencing, rugby, sports shooting, grass hockey, BMX cycling, road cycling, mountain biking, track biking, slalom canoeing, chair fencing And 7-wheel drive.
Deodoro already has 60% of the permanent competition areas built-the National Shooting Center, the modern pentathlon pool, the National Equestrian Center and the Grass Hockey Center need only adaptations. Walter Calixto de Oliveira, a sports shooting athlete, praised the space. “There is no place for the same training in the country. And I think it will look even better for the Rio Games,” he said. According to his coach, Paulo Silva, Calixto is sure to participate in the 2016 Paralympics.
In the National Equestrian Center, in addition to the revitalization, 14,000 temporary seats will be inserted and the numbers of stables will be increased. “We have 180 stables and we will increase to 240, number of horses that will compete. We want to increase and improve our space, including a new veterinary clinic that will be permanent,”explained Ten. Cel. Ataíde Pereira, manager of equestrian and command of the Army Equestrian School.
In addition to these already existing spaces, the region will win three more permanent installations: the BMX track, the slalom kayak circuit and the Deodoro Arena. These structures, with more than 500m², will be part of the Olympic Training Center (COT), used later to the Games for training of athletes of high income and also for leisure of the population. The mountain bike trail and the rugby and combined arena of the modern pentathlon will be provisional.
If the Deodoro region is considered strategic from a development point of view, the Barra region is considered the heart of the 2016 Games. Most of the facilities will be implemented in the Olympic Park, but the area will also receive the Olympic and Paralympic Village, Which will host the more than ten thousand participating athletes; The International Transmission Center (IBC); The Main Media Center (MPC); A media hotel and three media villages, which will host exclusively members of the press.
After the Games, the Olympic Park will be transformed into a great national legacy. It will be the space that will house the Olympic Training Center (COT), which will take advantage of most of the permanent facilities, maintaining 40,000 square meters of training space for high-performance athletes in various modalities.”40% of the Olympic Park will be transformed into a residential area, while 60% will be maintained as an Olympic Center, and will also be used as a public park,” explained the EOM president.
The Olympic Park will occupy a total area of 1.18 million square meters, equivalent to the area where the Leme neighborhood is located, near Copacabana. In the region, 16 Olympic modalities will be played: basketball, track cycling, gymnastics, trampoline gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, handball, judo, greco-roman wrestling, wrestling, synchronized swimming, swimming, water polo, jumping, taekwondo, Fencing and tennis. The venue will also receive 10 Paralympic modalities: wheelchair basketball, boules, cycling, 5-a-side football, goalball, judo, swimming, rugby in a wheelchair, seated volleyball and wheelchair sneakers.
“At Barra da Tijuca, we will have a mega structure that will house athletes, the press and the dispute of various modalities. We will have a new temporary pavilion in the Rio Centro, an Olympic Park with all the necessary structure for the competitions and, a little further, a new golf course. Our idea is, even with four regions, to minimize the time of travel,”said Patricia Spain, executive director of infrastructure for Rio 2016.
On the golf course, Joaquim Monteiro remembers that the legacy will be national and counts on 100% private investment.”The Golf Course is being built with private resources. It was an empty area, and now we have a reason for its existence. This field will become public, with private money, being another legacy for the city, for the Country and for Latin America,”he said.
Region Copacabana And Maracana Region
Two other areas will receive disputes during the 2016 Games: Maracanã Region and Copacabana Region. In the first, competitions will be held at Maracanã, Sambódromo, Maracanãzinho, Parque de la Paz Julio de Lamare and at the Olympic Stadium.
In the Copacabana Region, athletes will compete in Flamengo Park, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Gloria Marina, Copacabana Fort and Copacabana Beach.
