Technical Glossary Of Cycling

Words like post mount, IS, press fit, tapered… They are terms we read daily in magazines or datasheets of our bikes, but with those names, it is common that not we hear well what they mean. Below we will explain some of these terms, and we ask that you to participate in the commentsbox, so to add any or to leave us any suggestions. Let’s start:

Oversize (OS): , the center of the handlebars measuring 25.4 mm. With the passage of the years are overstated the center of the handlebars, allowing do wider handlebars without increased weight. This over-sizing is what is called oversize or OS. In this case, the middle of handlebar, happens to have a diameter of 31.8 mm. This type of handlebars can be found for example at bike Rockrider 520.

” 1 ⅛”: standard diameter of address in mountain bike, although every day will evolve to other measures for greater rigidity in the direction such as the tapered (see below). Once, all bikes had 1 inch in diameter (which have many bikes City). The diameter of 1 ⅛”emerged as a need to provide greater rigidity in the direction, in disciplines such as mountain or road.

Tapered: is one of past diameters of address used, and most widespread in the new bikes. “This diameter has the peculiarity that is tapered, i.e., has a lower diameter of 1 ½”and a top diameter of 1 ⅛”. This represents an increase of stiffness in the front of our bicycle without adding weight.

IS (International Standard): is one of the systems of anchorage of the calipers to the frame or fork. In this case the anchorage is done by means of two screws and lateral way. It has been the standard until a few years ago that was replaced by the system most current post mount.

Post Mount: as we mentioned previously, is the system used today. The brake caliper is attached in front manner by means of two screws. With this system, what we get is filing a few grams to the bicycle, in addition to eliminating annoying noises and vibrations.

SAG: often read this word as soon as we talk about suspensions. SAG is the sinking of the suspensions caused by our weight, and not by the orography of the land. To measure it is made with the bike stop, helping a wall to support us, and to measure it, we can make it with a ring, which have incorporated many suspensions, or by means of a flange, which we withdraw later. According to the discipline that we practice, we will need more or less collapse. This is an issue which we will discuss in later posts.

Monopivote: is a rear suspension system. It is characterized by a direct action of the swingarm on the cushion. I.e., the swingarm behaves like a hinge, and rotates about a fixed point, called the pivot, hence comes its name. This system is used the bike Rockrider 500s.

System NEUF: patented by B’TWIN which consists of a virtual pivot. In this case, unlike the monopivote, the point around which revolves the tipper is not fixed, if that is not moved solidarity to an eccentric bearing located in the box. With this we can, effectively, eliminate the classical contamination of pedaling, or what is the same, this continuous back and forth characteristic of bicycles of double suspension, allowing you to take advantage of all our forces in an efficient pedaling. Is implemented in bicycle Rafal 900s.

You may have heard Q factor much lately because it is that trying to reduce the appearance of the double chainring and the single-pan. The Q factor is the gap between our legs, although manufacturers of components called Q factor to the maximum width of the connecting rods, i.e. the distance between the two outer parts of the thread of the pedals. This has a great importance in Biomechanics in order to achieve a more efficient pedaling and avoid injury.

With this last term I say goodbye until the next entry, and I encourage you to participate with your comments, and thus add more definitions to this glossary. A greeting to all.
