The Ciclorrota implemented by the company of Sao Paulo traffic engineering (CET) in the region of Brooklyn, in Sao Paulo, drew attention from cyclists, drivers and the press. The comments of the stories sometimes make them look like a harmless measure. But is it?
Ciclorrota (or cycle route) recently inaugurated represents the best paths within the neighborhood of Brooklyn to travel by bike (see the map outlined by the go Bike). These paths already existed and were already used by most experienced cyclists who knew well the neighborhood. Now were flagged, both to indicate to which cyclists the best streets as to make them even safer, reducing the speed of the cars and encouraging sharing.
The ciclorrota is not a unique path for bicycles. Nor is a link between parts of the city, or a script to walk (although it may very well be used for this). It’s a sign of the most appropriate channels to the rider travel through the region, when you need it, even if your destination is somewhere else. That is, it is a route planning on who uses the bicycle as a means of transportation, so you can have safer offsets.
Understand the difference here between bike lane, bikelane and ciclorrota.
Flagged pathways indicate the presence and the preference of the bike on the other vehicles such as the transit code for all roads. There’s hours of operation, as is to be expected in any serious cycling infrastructure that is dedicated to the transport. The ciclorrota is there, available for cyclists, on any day, any time.
For horizontal signs (of soil) and vertical (plates). Ground signaling resembles those painted by cicloativistas regularly in the city for years, increasing the safety of cyclists at the same time claiming your right to movement. The Ciclorrota meets the low-cost measures and rapid implementation suggested by Go to Bike a few years ago. I have also commented here the importance of signal Ciclorrotas.
I hope the CET has tasked to signal the Ciclorrota the same agent that when deleting similar signage made by cyclists in AV. Paulista, said that bicycles painted on the asphalt confused drivers and the company answered only to automobiles. Could be a great learning experience. The CET is evolving and its employees need to follow this change (or look for another job).
The concept of Ciclorrota remember the Bicycle Boulevards that exist in some cities of other countries. Streets that had less traffic have reduced speed and receive your vertical and horizontal signalling, prioritizing the use of bicycle and discouraging the use of the automobile.
Abroad, sometimes blocks are closed to only local traffic (who lives there), except for those going on a bike. Intersections are rethought to become safer for cyclist and crossings with arterial routes receive specific signaling.
Many concepts of traffic calming are used in Bicycle Boulevards, making the environment much more enjoyable and safer for people (on foot or by bike), prioritizing the life and fluidity. The Bicycle Boulevards follow the concept of “cities for” people. Is one of the ways to humanize the traffic in the city.
The Portland State University offers a guide to creating Bicycle Boulevards. There is also the guide prepared by the city of Berkeley, that successfully implemented various Bicycle Boulevards. More information can be found here…
The Ciclorrota is implemented in a critical region, where the main avenues are narrow, with fast traffic and bus lanes. There are practically no side streets bordering the avenues they could become intuitive paths for cyclists who do not know well the region.
Alternative routes are interrupted and, for the most part, unknown. What the CET did was signal and make safer these routes, so that cyclists passing through the recognize and use, rather than take a chance on the main roads.
Signaling legitimizes the presence of road bike and encourages sharing and respect. That’s what the rider more precise. The cost is extremely lower than that of cycle tracks segregated, no reduction in the space for the car and, as we could see, implementation time is much shorter. The reduction of speed is an important point, as it increases the safety of both routes for cyclists as for pedestrians and drivers themselves.
The main criticisms that circulated in the press in the early days of the Ciclorrota demonstrated that still don’t really know what it was. Expectations badly directed and lack of understanding of the concept have made statements like ” comes up take anything anywhere or ” ” for “
The goal of Ciclorrota is not taking from one point to another – as the Bikelane leisure parks League. It is simply the best paths for bicycle traffic and ensure your priority and safety on these routes. The source and destination depends on where the came from and where he’s going. It’s not a circuit and a measure of support and encouragement to the displacement in bike.
Climbs exist because the region isn’t flat in your entirety. There is an excerpt, which obviously needs to be accessed by a ramp. Review the streets around and see that to avoid that stretch of climb, would be necessary to use another ascent, a one-way street, or a risky stretch of Avenue
More Reviews from mentioning the fact that there are cobbled streets. In fact this type of pavement is not nothing nice to the rider and may even harm the wheels of bikes with thin tires. We understand that there was no wait a resurfacing the street for only after implementing the Ciclorrota, but cover with asphalt, although only in the via where circulating bicycles, now becomes quite indicated.
There were also complaints about the lack of oversight regarding the speed of the cars and the minimum distance for overtaking, which have not been observed. For drivers take seriously these determinations, it is imperative that there is, although eventually, supervision and punishment.
Tracks communicating the obligation to keep the distance of one metre and a half to overcome bicycles also would help a lot at the beginning of the operation. Understand why the distance of 1 m is important.
